KUNC radio signal remains down in Grand County, winter weather holding back repairs
KUNC listeners in Grand County can usually dial into 91.9 FM and listen to the radio station. However, the station has been down for approximately two weeks as of Tuesday, Nov. 26, due to an issue with the antenna system, according to KUNC Membership Coordinator Holland Andringa.
Andringa explained that the Grand County station’s configuration is “unusual” from other antennas. The Grand County antenna is mounted onto a light pole in Granby Ranch rather than a traditional tower, which creates some problems for maintenance crews.
Snowy conditions make the maintenance more difficult. Crews are unable to climb the pole like a traditional tower, and can’t transport and position a large lift machine that is required to fix it. Additionally, active snowmakers are positioned right at the base of the light pole where the antenna is stationed.
The radio station attempted to fix the problem on Friday, Nov. 22, but were unsuccessful, according to KUNC Programming and Operations Manager Desmond O’Boyle. O’Boyle said that crews are planning on conducting another trip to Granby Ranch in early December or whenever there is a break in winter storms.
Andringa said that KUNC is exploring solutions, but the station could potentially remain offline in Grand County until the spring.
In the meantime, listeners can stream via KUNC.org or the KUNC app as an alternative.
