Despite this year’s challenges, the Middle Park High School lacrosse team is at seven wins and two losses as of April 21.

“It has been a roller coaster ride with few home games, since the school campus is under construction,” said community member Amy Chamberlin. “Lots of travel and missing school; games have been canceled due to the weather.”

The team has succeeded even without having a full roster this season, due to illnesses, injuries, and it being hockey and ski season.

On their roster, they have five seniors (Asher Michel, Tanner Schnurr, Josh Kirwan, Kasen Hofsetz and Jack Lee), 10 juniors, eight sophomores, and three freshmen. Scott Anderson, Chris Bonnett, Brian Matzen and James Chamberlin coach the team.

The team’s only home game was held on the soccer field on April 8. They lost to Vail Mountain 9-4, but “the fan attendance was amazing!” said Chamberlin. “We handed out free school spirit gear.”

This is the Panthers’ second season as a Colorado High School Activities Association-sanctioned high school lacrosse team. They have 15 games for the regular season. Their next game is against Pueblo West on April 25. The Panthers will play closer to home at the Fraser Valley Sports Complex. The coaches hope to host more in-county games at the Fraser Fields on April 26, April 27 and May 3.

“If the weather cooperates, we will hand out free spirit gear to fans who attend to cheer us on,” said Chamberlin.

Since there won’t be bleachers at the Fraser Fields, the audience should bring their own chairs.
