Return to the Renaissance with ‘Something Rotten!’
Audiences can experience Shakespearean comedy with a modern twist during Rocky Mountain Repertory Theatre’s production of “Something Rotten!” this August. The story of two brothers setting out to write the first musical, “Something Rotten!” is a hilarious mashup of 16th century Shakespeare and 21st century Broadway.
Set in the 1590s, brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are desperate to write a hit play but are stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star known as The Bard. When a local soothsayer foretells the future of theatre, Nick and Nigel set out to write a show that will change history.
Rocky Mountain Rep’s production features: Matt Frye as Nick Bottom; Joe Hebel as Shakespeare; Michael E. Martin as Nostradamus; Jeremiah Smith as Nigel Bottom; Luiza Vitucci as Bea; and Karis Avisa as Portia. Behind the scenes is the design team: Cody Tellis Rutledge (scenic); DJ Pike (projections); Ethan Newman (lighting); Sarah D. Speck (sound); and Nicole M. Harrison (costumes). The production team includes: Amy Radebaugh (stage management); Stephanie Hansen (choreography); and Michael Jordan (musical direction). Michael Querio is the show’s director. The musical farce runs from now until Aug. 24.
“Some Kind of Wonderful” – the music of Carole King
Rocky Mountain Rep is also showing “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical,” until Aug. 26. The theatre is proud to be the first Colorado regional theater to open this show. “Beautiful” tells the true story of Carole King’s remarkable journey from teenage songwriter to inductee at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Audiences can hear their favorite songs, sung by Rocky Mountain Repertory Theatre alumna Suzanna Champion.
Showings of “Something Rotten!” and “Beautiful” are: Monday at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are at 7:30 p.m., and Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m.
Please note that “Something Rotten!” contains comedic adult language throughout.
